Dinner, and Then a Thunderstorm

Most restaurants give you a table. This one gives you a rainforest — and about once an evening, the weather turns.

A Room Built, Not Decorated

The dining room is a recreated Amazon rainforest, and it is built rather than dressed. Tree trunks hold up the ceiling. Rock faces run along the walls. Every table and chair is cut from solid timber, no two the same shape, under a canopy of leaves that closes over the whole room.

Torches light it after dark. Waterfalls run down the rocks. It is the sort of place where children stop mid-sentence on the way in, which is most of the point.

The Wildlife Moves

Set through the room are lifelike animatronic animals — not statues. They shift, they turn, they make noise. Mechanical butterflies work their way through the branches overhead. Guests tell us the animals are the first thing their children talk about afterwards, and the reason they ask to come back.

Then the Lights Drop

Every so often the room goes dark. Thunder rolls overhead, a tropical rainstorm passes across the canopy, and the whole restaurant looks up at once — which, if you have ever tried to hold the attention of a table of children through a main course, is worth a great deal.

Then it clears, the lights come back up, and everyone goes back to their ribs.

And Alvin Is Real

Among all the machinery there is one genuine resident: Alvin, a blue-and-gold macaw, who holds the best perch in the building and knows it.

“The food was amazing and also the cocktails were good, but what stole my heart was Alvin.”— a guest, on Google

The Food Is Not the Gimmick

A themed room is easy to get wrong by treating the kitchen as an afterthought. Ours runs to more than 200 dishes: full racks of Jack Daniel's glazed baby back ribs, USA and Argentina Angus steaks, burgers, pizza, pasta, seafood and sharing platters large enough to stop a table mid-conversation. Vegetarian and vegan options run throughout.
